The Defense of Marriage Act is one of the most reprehensible legislative acts that has existed in my own short lifetime. Great strides have been made in the last few decades but it’s more than upsetting just how damn long it takes to just treat people good. Humanity has a shitty record with bringing equality about.

Hell, just 6 years before I was born it was still legal to fire a woman for being pregnant. Legislation was passed in 1978 to prohibit that practice. I’m assuming it was wide-spread enough to actually require legislation. I don’t see a lot of laws passed protecting people from infractions that are minimal (even if that’s what should happen in the name of equality – you’ve still gotta make a big enough case). And yet pregnancy discrimination still happens….

Affordable Care Act

Since the President and Congress passed the Affordable Care Act in 2010 the conservatives have done nothing but try to repeal it. In fact 37 times they have unsuccessfully voted on a repeal. With a floundering economy (jobs don’t equate a good economy to me – it requires quality jobs [fuck walmart]), struggling poor and middle class, the destruction of unions, and mass murderers run amok with semi-automatic weapons they spend their time focusing on repealing legislation designed to help those who don’t wish to go into debt in order to merely….live.

Reprehensible.

Ehhh….

I could write entire blogs on every issue I just briefly mentioned and perhaps will at some point. The bottom line is that even if the Supreme Court finally overturns DOMA, which I do believe will happen at a 5-4 or 6-3 vote, then the fight is not over. The Affordable Care Act was ruled Constitutional and yet the conservatives seem hell-bent on tearing it to shreds. It’s not surprising. The same thing happened with Medicare. Fortunately no conservative President was sitting in the Executive Branch again until the program became so popular that repeal was impossible to the conservative base because the program was….successful.

These conservatives will do their best to undermine Congress the same with DOMA. The fight will be far from over. It rarely is over. We must be watchdogs. We must be wary. We must be ready to fight.

I just wish they’d quit with the suspense and put forward their rulings on the big issues. I guess even the SCOTUS likes some drama now and then…

Important!

DOMA was rightfully declared unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court this morning. Let Freedom Ring!
